Area 51 (PlayStation 2)

HAZMAT operative Ethan Cole must save earth from the viral outbreak that has infected and mutated the staff of AREA 51 in the PS2 installment of the popular shooter series.AREA 51 features a cast full of Hollywood talent, including Powers Boothe, Marilyn Manson, and features THE X-FILES David Duchovny as Ethan Cole.The AREA 51 series first began as a light gun-based arcade shooter game, and now Midway has brought the series to the Playstation 2 as a first person shooter along the lines of HALO and DOOM. The game revolves around HAZMAT operative Ethan Cole, who has been summoned to Area 51 to discover the source of a deadly virile outbreak. He soon discovers that the staff of the secret alien research base has mutated into deadly, dangerous enemies. Even worse, Ethan himself quickly becomes infected. While the game is a fairly straight-forward first person shooter involving blasting everything that moves while searching for keys, secret codes, and other clues, it does have some interesting twists. Once Ethan becomes infected with the virus, he gains the ability to mutate into a stronger form complete with two ranged attacks. The visuals also change, taking on an almost infra-red interface. Once the single-player missions are finished, AREA 51 offers gamers a multiplayer mode that accommodates up to 16 players. Several different options are available, including deathmatch, capture the flag, and infection, in which players can play as mutants and attempt to infect the human players. There are also unlockable secrets that can be found by scanning objects, , computer workstations, and corpses. While AREA 51 has been absent from the arcade for awhile, first person shooter fans will immediately latch on to its Playstation 2 version. Fans of THE X-FILES should also check it out to hear star David Duchovny voice Ethan Cole.

Of course, they'll need the help of the Pikmin to do that these two can't do anything by themselves. Alternate controlling the main characters Olimar and his assistant as you command your Pikmin to defeat enemies, propagate more Pikmin, collect precious doodads, and solve puzzles.Take advantage of new colors of Pikmin and use new items strategically with more than 60 different species of enemy characters and randomly generated dungeons that span the planet, the game features even more game play than the original; Command red, blue and yellow Pikmin, as they all make a return, each with special abilities, like water resistance, bomb-carrying skills and invulnerability to fire. You see what looks like a bush, but when Mario walks up to it, it's like a cutout of a bush used for a set. Very creative. There's plenty of exploring to be done. Finding hidden items and paths always seems to be Mario's specialty. In addition to the unique gameplay, the characters' dialogue is less formal and, dare we say, hip. Mario's not going to "jumpizzle in the pipeizzle zizzle," but the chats between characters are not stiff.Time passes, the pages turn and a new chapter unfolds in an unfamiliar land! Get ready for a two-dimensional role-playing adventure for the ages as Mario returns to paper form in pursuit of a threat unlike any he's ever faced. This time around, more emphasis is placed on the paper abilities of Mario and his friends. He can turn sideways to slip through cracks, fold into a paper airplane to fly, roll into a tube, and much more. He can also use tons of items like hammers and thunderbolts. In our limited demo copy of Paper Mario 2, the first thing that struck us was the game's great graphics and use of color, not to mention out-and-out whimsicality.Timing Action Commands help you dodge or inflict damage, and impress the crowd to give you power for super attacks; fold into a paper airplane and take to the air, turn sideways to slip through narrow passages, and roll into a tube to bounce to safety.

Glasgow development house DC Studios opted for an overhead view and a revamped, cartoonish style, but the gameplay and storyline scream Classic Army Men action! The despicable Tan to rally his men for another valiant attack. The gameplay is similar to Army Men for Game Boy Color, consisting mostly of runnin' and gunnin' through a human world where potted plants can easily be mistaken for redwoods. Players will guide Sarge through 17 clever environments, occasionally using tanks or gunboats to terrorize the Tans.
