Burnout 3: Takedown (Xbox)
BURNOUT 3: Takedown is a fast-paced racing game that actually rewards dangerous driving, allowing players to rack up bonus points for causing accidents and driving in the wrong lane.
Electronic Art’s BURNOUT series has been a favorite among racing gamers since the first installment, and BURNOUT 3: Takedown for the XBox combines all of the favorite elements of the previous games with new modes, more cars, and online play. BURNOUT 3 is a racing game where players will want to almost crash their cars. When players narrowly miss pedestrians or skid around corners, their speed boost meter fills up. Causing other cars to wreck fills up the meter even more and may even make it larger. Likewise, crashing leads to a loss of power and a shorter meter. The aftertouch addition turns player crashes into slow motion events where the trajectory of the crashing car can actually be adjusted, allowing players to take down opponents even after crashing. The game features several modes of gameplay. There are the standard single race mode and career mode, plus the entertaining crash mode where the goal is to create the most spectacular crashes possible. There’s a head-to-head race that, if won, unlocks the opposing car for use. Another option is the time trial mode, and for drivers with anger issues, there’s the road rage mode with its never-ending line of opponents to wreak. The game also features online play for up to six players in single races, tournaments, and the party crash mode. With all of these options and many unlockable extra cars and tracks, BURNOUT 3: Takedown provides a game that rewards racing fans who can’t quite stay on the road.
